Mental Health Self Care

Mental health self-care describes actions one might take in order to reach optimal mental health. These are things you can do for yourself to stay healthy mentally, especially during these trying times. Many things can negatively influence our mental health, for example watching the news or reading through social media posts can affect us. Taking some time to care for yourself can help buffer some of the stressful things we experience day to day.

There are 6 main areas that are important to focus on to help us maintain good mental health. When we neglect these areas, it can create an imbalance in our mental health system. That in turn can make us more sensitive to the day to day stress we all experience.  The six areas are: Physical, Psychological, Emotional, Spiritual, Personal, and Professional.

Below you can see the “Mental Health Self Care Wheel,” that provides some ideas/examples of how you can care for yourself in each of the 6 categories.

Practicing self-care can help you stay healthy, manage your stress, maintain professionalism at work, and help maintain relationships with family and friends. Identify some self-care activities that you enjoy or want to try and then make a plan on how to incorporate those activities into your daily life. Taking care of yourself and your mental health is imperative for a healthy balanced life.
